This beautiful 16th-century farmhouse boasts many original features and offers ideal family accommodation.

This beautiful 16th-century farmhouse boasts many original features and offers ideal family accommodation.

Dating back to the 16th century, Bach y Graig is a superb Grade II listed farmhouse which offers spacious and comfortable accommodation which oozes charm and character. Situated on a working dairy farm with the discreet owner living next door, the property has been adapted to provide all the modern comforts one expects from a holiday home, it has retained so many of its period features including slate floors, wooden panelling, beams and an inglenook fireplace complete with the original bread oven and cauldron.
Built in 1567 by Sir Richard Clough of Denbigh, who became rich as a merchant in Antwerp, Bach y Graig was the first building in Wales to be built of brick and its architectural style owes much to Sir Richard’s Dutch associations. His wife Katheryn of Berain, known as the ’Mother of Wales’, was second cousin to Queen Elizabeth. In 1817 the main hall was demolished, leaving the large impressive gatehouse and farm buildings which still stand today. It is the gatehouse which is now the main farmhouse.
To the front of the farmhouse is a large lawned garden with swings for the children and outdoor seating, which is perfect for al fresco dining. Located at the end of a long private driveway, this impressive property is set in 200 acres of fertile farmland which includes a trail through 40 acres of woodland where Edward, the Black Prince once hunted. The property also has private fishing rights on the River Clwyd nearby. Situated within the Vale of Clwyd, which is home to the Offas Dyke path, there are lots of great walks in the area. The mountains of the Clwydian Range, which are a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, can be enjoyed on foot, by cycle or even on horseback.
Bach y Graig is approximately 4 miles from the historic market town of Denbigh and St Asaph which have a good selection of shops and eateries and there is a local shop and pub within 2 miles. Within an hours drive you can experience a wide variety of landscapes from fertile valleys, rolling hills and moorland to the rugged mountains of Snowdonia, 22 miles away, and the beaches of North Wales which include the bustling resorts of Rhyl and Prestatyn, 11 miles away and the Victorian seaside resort of Llandudno is 25 miles. For history lovers, there are several castles nearby at Bodelwyddan, Denbigh, Rhuddlan and Conwy as well as Bronze Age remains around Llyn Brenig. The National Trust’s Bodnant Gardens, Erdigg and Penrhyn Castle are within easy driving distance. Bargain hunters will enjoy a visit to the Tweedmill Shopping Outlet, 2 miles away, or Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet, 29 miles away. The Afonwen Antique and Craft Centre is just 5 minutes down the road and there is also a craft centre at Ruthin. Llangollen, where the International Eisteddfod is held annually, is 26 miles away. Enjoy a ride on the horse drawn canal boat or take a ride on the narrow gauge railway, which is popular with children, especially at Christmas time when Father Christmas comes along too. Over the border, the historic city of Chester is just a 40-minute drive. Why not walk the city walls, take a boat ride on the river, jump on one of the city tour buses or try your luck at the famous race courses. Families with children will enjoy Chester Zoo and Blue Planet Aquarium, which are again, within a 40 minute drive.
