This holiday property is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and is full of history and charm.

Great Cantal Granary, converted to holiday accommodation, was built in early Victorian times as the grain store for the adjoining Great Cantal Mill, which itself dates back to the 17th century. The mill, which last operated in the late 1940s, had a wooden overshot mill wheel on its east wall, powered by water from the River Aran. The water ran along a leat through the trees from the field beyond the mill and into a mill pond behind the mill, before rejoining the river near the ford.
The leat and the millpond were re-aligned in the 19th century to increase the water head and thus the potential power of the mill: the outline of both the original and later leats and millponds are still visible. The mill served as the ’court mill’ for the parish: local farmers brought their grain to Great Cantal, where it was stored in the Granary until it was milled, with the miller retaining some of the flour as payment for the milling.
Most of the mill machinery had been removed by the 1980s but one of the bedstones, made of French burr stone, dating from about 1830 and weighing over a ton, was still in place when the present owners, already resident in the old farmhouse opposite, acquired the Mill and Granary a few years ago. This bedstone was carefully removed and is now on display at Talgarth Mill, which is about 30 miles away, between Hay on Wye and Brecon. Since 1989, the Granary, Mill and Farmhouse have been in separate ownership to the farm, which is now owned and managed by a young family who live in a farmhouse up the lane. Open-plan, beamed living room with electric woodburner, stable door and farmhouse-style kitchen/dining area with Rayburn (for cooking/heating) and electric cooker. Utility. We enjoyed a very peaceful , comfortable and interesting week at The Granary. The property was easy to find ( and the owner Edmund kindly sent comprehensive instructions before hand ) , and is accessed via a working farmyard ( be prepared for enthusiastic but friendly dogs to greet you) and a drive over a small ford ( don't be put off , it is perfectly safe for your car and a fun part of the experience). The Granary itself was bigger than expected and everything we wanted from an old converted building : interesting history , quirky inside , comfortable and with all we needed for a great week of walking , cooking and exploring the area. It felt ' Covid-safe' with sensible precautions and some thought being given to striking the balance between safety and comfort. The location (set in a small , quiet valley) was fantastic. It felt remote and peaceful and was very beautiful. You can walk out from behind the cottage for miles over the countryside ( map and compass will allow you to explore at will if you feel like leaving the paths) ,and the views and bird life are worth the effort. The night sky kept us entertained for hours ( very little light pollution ) and we also did a lot of walking in the Elan Valley which was lovely. The nearest town/shops are a drive away , but a very pleasant and scenic drive and we saw hardly any traffic all week, so no big deal. There are plenty of spa towns in the area to visit and explore too. Edmund was the perfect host - welcoming , helpful and interesting without being in the least bit intrusive. If you are at all interested in fishing don't hesitate to go here - Edmund is a mine of information and gave us access to local beats which were outstanding and really made the trip for my husband. Overall we would very much recommend The Granary for a relaxing get away , and will definitely return at some point .
