Feel like the king and queen of the castle in this romantic retreat with open fire, heavily carved four poster bed and Victorian bathroom.

History is woven into the very foundations of this former gate tower. Set into the original walls that encircle the Grade I listed Gwrych Castle, Hen Wrych Hall Tower has been totally transformed to provide holidaymakers with a time-travelling trip into a distant and turbulent past.

The castle, lodges, towers and walls were designed by Lord and Lady Bamford Hesketh and architect Thomas Rickman circa 1822. Whilst the owners worked closely with the local Conwy conservation office to bring this suffering property back to life, they did so whilst leaving many of the original features untouched, including the cast-iron window and bread oven. The age-old front door tells a tale or two, with traces of old sailing ships carved into the wood, which are thought to be the work of Napoleonic prisoners of war.

On the ground floor, you’re met with a fantastic open plan social space. A Chesterfield couch, overhead beams, well-fitted kitchen area, wood burner and interior stone walls festooned in art all come together beautifully to make this a characterful area for spending time with your other half, all cosy and warm.

Another fine feature is the hand-carved mahogany staircase which runs up and down the length of the tower. A Victorian style bathroom awaits you on the first floor, complete with Thomas Crapper toilet cistern and tantalising deep slipper bath. Last but certainly not least, the second-floor bedroom houses a spectacularly ornate, hand-carved Elizabethan-style four poster bed - falling asleep has never been so easy than on such a lavish bedstead, blanketed by fine throws and fluffy pillows. The whole house is flooded with a sense of romance and medieval finery, and the fun doesn’t stop upon stepping outside this Grade II* listed wonder.

The property overlooks Hen Wrych Hall, a 500-year-old building that was once home to Felicia Hemans, the poet who wrote the timeless “The Boy Stood on the Burning Deck”, and the castle is ranked as one of the most significant castellated houses in Britain. A fantastic shingle beach lies just a 5-minute walk away from the property. Wide and expansive it gazes out to the offshore wind farm on the horizon. With golf courses, plentiful walks through woodland and scenic hills, Bodnant Gardens and the pretty Victorian-esque Llandudno seaside resort all within the local vicinity, there’s something to suit all manner of couples on their starry-eyed getaway.
